Flower Power 2017 is proud to once again support Chefs in the Classroom-Edible Education and Central Okanagan Community Gardens
The Okanagan Chefs Association launched a new program in Spring 2016 entitled Chefs in the Classroom – Edible Education. Modeled after other successful edible education classes all over North American, Chefs in the Classroom is unique in that is an Okanagan inspired, hands-on curriculum with links to our Aboriginal community and practices. The highlight of the 7-lesson course is a field trip to a working farm hosted by members of the Okanagan Chefs Association. Following a very successful semester last spring, this year, the program will expand to 7 classrooms in the Okanagan.
Central Okanagan Community Gardens (COCG) is a non-profit society with several gardens located throughout the area. They work with local governments to utilize potential garden space for local residents.
Their mission is to help neighbourhoods and communities create sustainable green spaces for gardening, food production, gathering and education.
Their goals include:
- Developing up to two garden sites a year and maintaining those already established
- Increasing awareness of the benefits of community gardens
- Encouraging growing practices that are sustainable and environmentally responsible
